Mexico, a country amongst the world's largest metal producers, has a mining history dating back almost 500 years.  Receiving considerable foreign and local investment, the exploration and production of minerals has preference for land use over other economic activities with total mineral production in 2010 reaching $13.9 billion.  According to the Mexican Chamber of Mines, in 2010, Mexico was the world's second largest ranked producer of silver, having produced 128.6 million ounces adding to their total production of over 10 billion ounces of silver to date. The country was also the fifth largest ranked producer of lead, sixth producer of zinc, eleventh producer of gold and twelfth producer of copper.
